It doesn’t feel pleasant and it has bad consequences for the health of teeth. But what about when you are sleeping? The problem is that you might not even know that you are doing it. This is what dentists call bruxism and it can cause complications when it comes to your oral health.

Medical professionals reckon that there are two primary causes of nocturnal teeth grinding. Stress can manifest itself in all sorts of different ways in different patients, including the grinding of teeth during sleep. The second major cause is that teeth are not aligned properly and therefore the patient grinds them together while sleeping.

Kingston upon Thames dentists cannot do much to help with the stress of their patients; that is a matter for health professionals of a different stripe. But in cases where bruxism is being caused by misaligned teeth then dentists can advise patients to undergo some sort of tooth straightening treatment. It is essential that bruxism is stopped wherever it occurs because it can have serious implications for the health of sufferers’ mouths.

The substance called enamel guards our teeth and it is generally very hard wearing. However it is threatened not only plaque but also by teeth grinding. Once the enamel is worn away then plaque has an even better chance of attacking the fundamental structure of teeth and causing cavities. For any patient who suffers from bruxism it will be advisable to wear a mouth guard during sleep. These devices take the impact off the grinding and protect the enamel.

The act of grinding your teeth during sleep is properly known as bruxism. It is as common as snoring in the United Kingdom and needs to be dealt with because of the effects it can have on the oral health of the sufferer.

Many experts believe that stress is a major factor in teeth grinding during sleep. Dentists also offer faulty alignment of teeth as a potential cause. It is always worth reporting suspected teeth grinding to your dentist so that your mouth can be examined.

Grinding your teeth in your sleep can lead to problems in your mouth. It is possible that the sustained pressure placed in your teeth will lead to one or more of them becoming cracked, chipped or even worn down. It is desirable that this is not allowed to happen so that procedures to correct these problems are avoided. These procedures can be time consuming and costly so it is best to simply eliminate teeth grinding in the first place.

Your dentist can examine your mouth to attempt to find a cause for your teeth grinding. If it is determined that stress is the likely cause then you might be referred to a mental health specialist. If teeth alignment is designated as the cause then your dentist can easily fit you a mouth guard to stop your teeth from having to take the strain of grinding during the night.

Teeth grinding during sleep might not seem like a major issue but it can cause inconvenient problems with, not just your teeth, but also your jaw and face too. Contact your Kingston-Upon-Thames dentist today for more information about teeth grinding during sleep and how to stop it.

It is something that happens to quite a lot of people in their lives and with most cases it is mild enough that they won’t realise. Bruxism is a very common sleeping disorder, all the advice you need on treatment can be found at a Surbiton town dental practice. Although in most cases Bruxism is mild it can cause issues with your health if it is severe. There are a range of common symptoms of Bruxism such as: earaches, headaches, insomnia, depression, very sore and painful jaw, increased sensitivity of the teeth, anxiety and stress. Bruxism can also bring about strange wear patterns on the occulsal surface, create fractures in the teeth, and over time will lead to occulsal trauma which often results in tooth loss and gum recession. There is no one accepted cure for this disorder but there are treatments available that can severely reduce the Bruxism and even eliminate it completely these treatments include: mouth guards, splints, Nociceptive trigeminal inhibitors, biofeedback, botox, dietary supplements, and general repairing

The success (or failure) of all dental work carried out in the mouth depends on a patient’s occlusion- the coming together of the teeth which also impacts on the rest of the skull, neck and jaw. As we get older, the position of the occlusion will change due to tooth loss and tooth wear and this causes the muscles and the jaw to work harder- the greatest offender being teeth grinding or bruxism. Bruxism can be caused by stress, anxiety, an aggressive personality, sleep disorders, medication or caffeinated drinks- it can be treated with medication, dental re-alignment and therapy. But malocclusion (‘bad bite’) and can lead to serious health issues if unchecked. A ‘bad bite’ can accelerate gum erosion and stress on the jaw (causing clicking), which in turn leads to headaches, earaches, eye and sinus pains, neck and even back problems. Treatment lies in the hands of your dentist. Depending on how bad the teeth are, an orthodontist can restore your bite with crowns, bridges or fillings. If the teeth are in reasonable shape, then a brace can be fitted to check the alignment of the occlusion.

A Worcester Park dentist looks at the work of an orthodontist, focusing on the re-alignment of occlusions (the coming together of the teeth), or jaw positions, that can affect the growth of teeth, tooth loss, over and under bite, and crooked and misaligned teeth. Such occlusions can lead to severe health issues such as gum disease, teeth grinding (bruxism), jaw stress, headaches, earache, sinus and eye strain and even neck and back pain. (If bruxism is the cause of the worn teeth, it would have to be addressed before any re-constructive work could be carried out). From a young age, the problem is tackled by the use of braces to align crooked teeth, which also looks good cosmetically once the treatment is complete. Varying designs of braces can be used depending on the individual and are attached to the teeth, pulling them slowly into alignment and refining the occlusion. Oral hygiene is important to the success of this procedure. But as we get older, our teeth will wear and in some cases, fall out, which will affect the ‘bite’ of the jaw and put stress on it, causing the problems already mentioned. Treatment comes in many forms depending on the level of the problem. With a missing tooth, the orthodontist can offer a dental implant whereby a false tooth is attached to a fixture screwed into the jaw. Alternatively, a bridge can be used, a false tooth being joined to two adjacent teeth. If the teeth are chipped or worn, crowns can be fitted, but if the teeth are in reasonable shape, a brace will be used to re-align the occlusion.

Teeth grinding (also called bruxism) can be treated successfully at the Shepperton Dental Clinic. Teeth grinding occurs while you are sleeping and you may be unaware that you are grinding your teeth unless someone else tells you. There are many reasons for grinding your teeth including; nerves, malposed teeth, and discrepancies between the upper and lower jaws. Children also grind their teeth because they bite edge to edge and are not hitting with an overlap. When the adult teeth erupt, this usually improves. Your Shepperton dentist will recommend the appropriate treatment for your child and you, if you are grinding your teeth.

Teeth grinding isn’t usually a big problem, but can cause jaw, mouth, neck, and facial pain. Poor fillings, removable full or partial dentures, and/or missing teeth, can throw off the bite and lead to teeth grinding. The dentist will check your .mouth for wear patterns, and take impressions to have stone models made of your mouth, so that the teeth’s wear patterns can be observed. A bite equilibration may be performed, or the dentist may have the dental laboratory make a hard or a soft type of mouth guard to help keep you from damaging your teeth anymore. These appliances work to help diagnose the teeth grinding problem, and to help solve the problems. If you are grinding your teeth, your dentist will be able to detect the wear patterns on the appliance. You could possibly be referred to a specialist depending on what type of treatment is required to resolve your teeth grinding. Many types of appliances and treatments exist for teeth grinding, and these will be reviewed at your Shepperton Dental Clinic. The problem could also be a very easy fix, such as adjusting the bite on one or two teeth. Visit your Shepperton dentist and get some advice if this problem occurs!
